Gov. J. Millard Tawes, center, was declared today as "Honorary True and Absolute Baron and Reigning sovern of the Maryland Jousting Tournament Association."  He is flanked by Delegate Henry J. Fowler, left, who sponsored  the bill Govenor Tawes signed, making jousting the Official State Sport;  and by Miss Mary Lou Bartram, robing the governor.  Fowler is also president of the association for Jousting, the ancient horseback riding sport  (Evening Capital 4/6/62)

Tradition Lives On
J. Paul Smith Of Glen Burnie, who rode in the town's first jousting tournament 51 years ago, Saturday Crowned Mrs. May P. Watts of Severn honorary Queen of the 1959 version as Miss Pat Sabin looks on.  Back in 1908, Mrs. Watts was the events reigning beauty of the day.  To the right, is Miss Alice Blum of Jessup, winner of the Amateur Crown.
Mike Virts, 18, Wins Top Pro Joust Spot

Eighteen-year-old Mike Virts took first place, professional class, with ease at the Petersville Jousting Tournament sponsored by the Silver Bit Riding Club last week. Mike speared all three one-half  inch rings he rode for after competing successfully in the one inch ride.  By taking all three half-inch rings, he eliminated the need for a ride-off for first place. Bobby, Linda and Kenny Enfield all 
instructed by their father, professional champion, Leon Enfield, accounted for five jousting spots at Petersville.  Kenny is 12, Bobby 13 and Linda 16. Wayne Tucker got a second leg on the Petersville trophy in special competition.  Leon Enfield also has two legs on the three-leg trophy.  Jousters anticipate an exciting meet next year when the two pros battle for the Petersville trophy in the Farmers Woods Joust.

 A JOUSTING FAMILY- Father Paul Fleury III and sons Charles, Lewis, Bill, Paul IV and Alex.
This picture was taken in 1937 on the estate of Mr. and Mrs. George Bartram, parents of Mary Lou Bartram, Kingsville, Maryland.  The riders shown in the picture are: Paul A. Fleury, 3rd and his five sons;  Paul A. Fleury, 4th, Charles M. Fleury, William E. Fleury, Alex A. Fleury and Lewis L. Fleury, on the pony. 

      The white Arabian on which Paul A. Fleury, 3rd is mounted was named Monarch, and was a former circus/rodeo performer.  Mr. Fleury was Grand Marshall at all of the Tournaments held at Saint Stephens Church, Bradshaw, Maryland  from the early thirties until World War II and then revived for several years after the war. He also marshaled many tournaments at other locations, upon requests. The last one being for the Boumi Temple at Owings Mills, Maryland, when he was 83 year old, on which occasion he stayed in the saddle for eight continuous hours. 

      While the three older Fleury brothers, Paul, Charles and Bill, rode in tournaments infrequently, Alex participated in practically all tournaments held on the western shore of Maryland, and some in Virginia and West Virginia, from 1935 through 1942, with Lewis joining him after 1938. 

      This was, of course, before the formation of the Maryland State Jousting Association, and the informal State Championship went to the highest money winner each year, which position Alex occupied in 1938, 1939 and 1941, and Lewis held in 1940. 

      Paul A. Fleury 3rd, was instrumental in the revival and continuation of Jousting in Maryland and was recognized posthumously by his installation as a charter member in the National Jousting Association Hall Of Fame at Natural Chimneys Virginia.  Alex Fleury was also installed in the Hall Of Fame in 1999.
